Blues-rock legend Rory Gallagher was born March 2nd, 1948, tearing it up with that raw, sweaty guitar fire that still influences players today. Ric Ocasek of The Cars dropped in on March 23rd, 1949, crafting those slick new wave hooks. And back in March 1978, Patti Smith Group hit us with their raw, defiant album Easter, a pure punk poetry. As we charge into March, the scene is buzzing with new releases and updates on all fronts. Our thoughts are with the legendary band Boston and the family of lead singer Tommy DeCarlo. Tragically, Tommy passed away on March 9, 2026, at age 60—after a battle with brain cancer. Crank one up for Tommy.

Thanks for reading! We mourn the recent passing of ‘60s counterculture icon “Country” Joe McDonald at age 84, whose blistering anti-war rag “I-Feel-Like-I’m-Fixin’-to-Die” electrified Woodstock and embodied the rebellious heart of protest rock that’s still echoing today. March 8 celebrates the birth of synth-rock trailblazer Gary Numan in 1958, whose futuristic vibes in tracks like “Cars” paved the way for electronic edges in indie scenes. Sadly, the same day in 1973 saw the loss of Grateful Dead’s Ron “Pigpen” McKernan at just 27, a bluesy keyboard wizard whose gritty soul fueled the band’s early psychedelic jams.

THE SOUNDWAVE FOUNDATION

We are launching The Soundwave Student Program, working with students journalist, giving them the opportunity to be published and take part in building rock culture. On March 1, 1944, Roger Daltrey burst onto the scene, destined to become the powerhouse frontman of The Who, belting out anthems that captured youthful rebellion and raw emotion. Just a day later, March 2 marks the 1942 birth of Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground visionary whose gritty, poetic lyrics reshaped underground rock and influenced generations of boundary-pushers.These moments aren't just dates; they're the fuel that ignites today's musical fire, reminding us that rock's past is the blueprint for its fierce, independent future.

The Soundwave Foundation:

Speaking of independence, at the heart of everything we do is The Soundwave Foundation, our nonprofit powerhouse dedicated to championing rock music and alternative rock without a single corporate string attached. We're all about amplifying rising talents through daily free journalism, in-depth reports, interviews, podcasts, and video spotlights that cut through the noise. Plus, we're safeguarding rock's legacy with accessible oral histories and digital archives, while hosting free educational workshops and public events to nurture the next wave of creators. In a world where big labels shelve authenticity for algorithms, your support keeps us free and fierce. If you're passionate about preserving the real music and pushing new voices to the forefront, consider donating today. Every contribution fuels the fight, join us in building a community where rock thrives on its own terms!

Donate Today

Top Headlines:

- February 27, 2026: Dive into Sego's wild new album "Direct To DVD," a chaotic masterpiece that flips expectations with its unpredictable twists and turns, proving indie rock's still got endless surprises up its sleeve.

- February 26, 2026: Unearth Ted Nugent's archival gem "Nuge Vault, Vol. 2: 1975 Demos & Live Rarities," a raw snapshot of the guitar slinger's breakthrough era that captures the untamed spirit of '70s rock innovation.

- February 25, 2026: Our special report on "The Industry" pulls no punches, exposing how surveillance, shelving tactics, and streaming giants are waging a covert battle against authentic music— a must-read for anyone fed up with corporate control.

- February 24, 2026: Spotlight on the Red Clay Strays, a band masterfully blending historically clashing genres into harmonious anthems that bridge divides and rally the rock faithful.

- February 23, 2026: An artist deep-dive into Mario Lalli, the undisputed godfather of desert rock, chronicling his life's work in forging a subgenre born from sun-scorched jams and relentless creativity.

- February 20, 2026: Revisiting the Kurt Cobain saga three decades on, with fresh insights from the 2025 study that keeps the evidence resonating and Nirvana's rebellious legacy burning bright.

New reports are published every weekday at 6am CST.

More Stories

The Green Room:

This past Friday, we aired Episode 17 of The Green Room, featuring the legendary Mario Lalli. We thank you for your support, donations to The Soundwave Foundation and your support through our online store.

ROCK HISTORY LOOK BACK:

February 20, 1959. A 16-year-old Jimi Hendrix (then Johnny Allen Hendrix) made his electrifying stage debut in the basement of Seattle’s Temple De Hirsch Sinai synagogue, performing with an unnamed local band. His wild, show-off style, dropping to his knees, sticking out his tongue, and unleashing raw energy got him fired before the second set even began, but that very chaos foreshadowed the revolutionary guitar mastery, feedback innovation, and fearless presence that would redefine rock and inspire blues, indie and alternative players to embrace the unconventional and push boundaries without apology.

THE SOUNDWAVE FOUNDATION:

We endorses the unconventional and raw expression! It was a gut punch to early rock ‘n’ roll, but the spirit carried on.

The Soundwave Foundation

We exist to champion rock music without the gatekeepers. These issues led to a U.S. Department of Justice antitrust investigation into Live Nation Entertainment and its subsidiary, Ticketmaster.

Filed in May 2024, the civil lawsuit alleges that the companies have monopolized key aspects of the live concert industry through exclusive contracts and other practices. The DOJ is seeking structural remedies, including the potential divestiture of Ticketmaster. Now supported by attorneys general from 40 states and the District of Columbia, the case is moving forward toward a March 2026 trial, even as a federal government shutdown has prompted a denied request for a procedural stay. This lawsuit represents a significant challenge to the companies’ business model, which has dominated live events for over a decade. Below is an overview of the case’s background, key developments, and potential implications.

Thanks for reading! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

The investigation stems from the 2010 merger between Live Nation and Ticketmaster, which was approved by the DOJ subject to a consent decree intended to prevent anti-competitive behavior. That agreement was amended in 2019 following allegations of violations. The combined entity now controls approximately 70% of major concert promotions in the U.S. and holds exclusive ticketing agreements with many venues.

It could be argued that these arrangements limit competition, drive up fees, often adding 30% or more to base ticket prices and disadvantage artists and smaller promoters. A parallel consumer class-action lawsuit, filed shortly after the DOJ’s complaint, seeks up to $5 billion in damages for overcharged fans. Live Nation maintains that its market position results from efficient operations and strong industry relationships.

The case is proceeding in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, overseen by Judge Denise L. Cote. Fact discovery is scheduled to conclude by October 30, 2025, with a jury trial set for March 2026. The DOJ’s proposed remedies include separating Ticketmaster from Live Nation and prohibiting exclusive venue deals, which could allow competitors like StubHub and SeatGeek greater access to the market.

Live Nation has indicated it is preparing for possible changes, including the loss of exclusive ticketing rights at certain venues. The company’s stock dipped about 2% in after-hours trading following recent court developments related to the government shutdown. A federal government shutdown has strained DOJ resources, leading to a request for a stay in the proceedings on October 1, 2025. Judge Cote denied the motion without prejudice, allowing the case to continue while permitting the DOJ to refile if necessary.

Additional pressures include a September 2025 Federal Trade Commission (FTC) lawsuit against Ticketmaster, alleging deceptive practices in ticket resale and facilitation of bot operations. That suit, joined by seven states, seeks civil penalties and consumer refunds. On October 6, 2025, the Supreme Court declined to hear Live Nation’s appeal in a separate consumer antitrust case involving ticket pricing disputes. A criminal antitrust investigation by the DOJ, focusing on Live Nation executives including CEO Michael Rapino, is also ongoing.

The outcome could fundamentally alter the live events landscape, potentially lowering costs for consumers and providing more options for artists and venues. Public opinion polls indicate strong support for breaking up the companies, with about 60% of Americans favoring antitrust action against such monopolies.

Live Nation has stated it will defend the case vigorously, As discovery wraps up and external challenges persist, both sides are preparing for what is set to be a landmark trial.

We will continue to keep you up to date as new developments emerge. Keep supporting what we are doing here at Soundwave and keep rockin!

Soundwave Music Media

Subscribe now

Thanks for reading! These days, the band continues to maintain a packed schedule and push the bar. However, that’s not what we are talking about today.

On April 18, 2025, Arcy Drive released their second full studio album titled “The Pit.” The album immediately starts rocking with the song “Under the Rug.” It features a well-blended style of rock, combining an edgy garage rock sound with a touch of indie rock. The album also includes a softer set of acoustic songs like “Oak Tree” and “Over the Hill.” The fan favorite so far is “Louie,” which has already received 3 million plays on Spotify alone. Overall, “The Pit” is worth a listen and marks a great leap forward for the band, adding interesting music to their catalog and showcasing their unique sound.

Arcy Drive continues to evolve and improve. Recently, they announced a packed schedule for May and onward into 2025. You can find out more about tickets and locations on the band’s website. We will continue to report on Arcy Drive as information comes our way.
